Is your business audit-ready? A quick self-check
A plain-English way to gauge how close you are to SOC 2, HIPAA, or PCI readiness — before you spend money on a formal audit.
A customer just asked for your SOC 2 report. Or a regulation suddenly applies to you. Or you started taking card payments and realized PCI is a thing. Now what?
Before you hire an auditor, it helps to know roughly where you stand. Here's a quick self-check that maps to the questions almost every framework asks.
1. Do you control who has access?
- Is MFA enforced on critical systems?
- Do you remove access promptly when someone leaves?
- Do people have only the access they actually need (least privilege)?
If you can't confidently answer yes, identity and access management is your first gap.
2. Can you prove what you do?
Auditors don't just want you to say you patch systems — they want evidence. Ask yourself:
- Do you have written policies (security, access, incident response)?
- Can you produce logs or records showing controls are actually running?
Compliance is the art of doing the right things and being able to demonstrate it.
3. Do you know where sensitive data lives?
You can't protect what you can't find. Map where regulated data (health, payment, personal) is stored, who can reach it, and how it's protected in transit and at rest.
4. Do you have an incident response plan?
Every major framework expects you to detect, respond to, and report incidents. A documented plan — with a breach-notification timeline — is table stakes.
5. Are your vendors in scope?
The tools and providers that touch your data are part of your compliance posture. Keep a list, and make sure your agreements (and their security practices) hold up.
Turning the self-check into a plan
If several of these gave you pause, that's normal — and it's exactly what a compliance readiness assessment is for. We map your current state to your target framework, then give you a prioritized list of gaps to close so an eventual audit holds no surprises.
A readiness assessment isn't a certification, but it's the fastest, cheapest way to find out how far you really have to go. Start here.
